ARMA Museum & Resort

At a T-junction in Pengosekan, turn left to the main entrance of the ARMA Museum & Resort ¤ [map] (tel: 0361-976 659; www.armabali.com; daily 9am–6pm). Opened in 1996 by art dealer Anak Agung Rai, the grand buildings are set in landscaped grounds. The upper floor of the main gallery is dedicated to Balinese paintings, some of them from the 1930s.

The lower floor features classical wayang (puppet) style works from the early 1900s, antique textiles and contemporary Indonesian art. Labels are in English, Indonesian and Japanese.

Another building displays works by famous artists, including the only paintings on Bali by the Javanese Raden Saleh and the German Walter Spies. Paintings by other foreign-born artists who lived and worked in Bali are shown too. The museum also promotes the performing arts with regular dance presentations and a children’s gamelan music and dance group (check website for details).
